If each of you can't stand the idea of being apart, it seems like there is still something there to salvage. Relationships go through different seasons. Even marriages have highs and lows, but if you are committed to the relationship, you can work it out and make it even stronger than it was.

One great thing you have going for you is that both you and your partner are interested in making it work. So the next step is putting forth the effort to improve the relationship. One thing you can do is stop and think back to the way things were in the beginning, when the relationship was working and you were feeling in-love. What were you doing then that you are not doing now? Focus on doing those things again. This can put some fire back into the relationship. Believe me, it's worked in my marriage. It was once dying and is now very much alive!

If there are certain topics that trigger arguments now, avoid those topics and instead focus on just loving each other. Then, when you have healed your hearts and your relationship is stronger, you can revisit some of those issues (if they are important and not just frivolous arguments!).

I have a resource that might give you some tips on healing your hearts and getting your relationship back on track. Check out my blog below if you are interested. Good luck!
References :
http://www.getoverbrokenheart.com

I'm going through this myself right now. Granted I'm sure we have different issues, but me and my boyfriend (now ex, we're taking a break) weren't happy. I'm not sure if this break will help anything, or if we're going to get back together or not, but it doesn't hurt to try. Sometimes you just need your own space and time to reflect on yourself. Maybe you guys should take a short break, so you can think about everything, really decide if you want to be together, if you can see yourselves having a future..etc. It's not always the solution, but if you want to try and make things work, maybe it could help things. Communication is key here, you both need to talk about your needs, why you're not happy, what you both think you could do differently.
References :
Personal experience.
