In May, 2009, the Maine Legislature extended marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples. As expected, opponents of equality, led by the National Organization for Marriage and the Catholic Church, petitioned to have those rights put to a vote by referendum. This film chronicles the final days of the on-the-ground campaign to protect marriage equality in Maine.
The Democratic National Committee ignored the fight to protect marriage for all couples in Maine, neglecting to donate funds to the cause (even though they reportedly raised over a million dollars from gay donors in June of this year) or to mobilize potentially thousands of volunteers through its Organizing for America arm. The DNC even sent emails to voters in Maine urging them to help with Jon Corzine’s failed gubernatorial reelection in New Jersey, potentially diverting needed volunteers, but also showing that they deemed the fight for marriage equality unworthy of their attention. President Obama never acknowledged the NO ON ONE campaign.
If marriage equality is to be fought for on a state-by-state basis, then our national gay rights organizations should hold the DNC and President Obama responsible for their inaction in Maine and in other state battles.
And so should we.
WHAT WE CAN DO:
President Obama was elected cashing our checks and making promises to our community, but so far he has failed to be the “fierce advocate” for gay rights that he said he would be. The gay community is being told to wait, and be patient—he’s only been in office a year. But many of us have been waiting for decades. We’re being told to wait while hundreds of much-needed soldiers are being thrown out of the military under Dont Ask Dont Tell (DADT), a policy President Obama could end today with an executive stop-loss order. We’re being told to wait while it is still legal in over thirty states to be fired from your job just for being gay, a practice we could end by passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). We’re being told to wait while the administration puts off repealing the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a law his justice department has defended by comparing loving gay relationships to incest and pedophilia. We’re being told to wait even while we have an overwhelming majority in the House, a filibuster-proof Senate, and a President who promised action on all of the aforementioned issues. It is unlikely that we will sustain this Democratic super-majority, so if not now, then when?
John Aravosis and Joe Sudbay of AMERICAblog have launched a donor boycott of the Democratic National Committee, Organizing for America, and the Obama campaign until Congress and the President pass ENDA and repeal DADT and DOMA, as was promised during campaign season, when the gay community gave plenty and worked hard to get Democratic candidates elected.
We encourage you to read more about it and sign the pledge here:

Marriage and Women
This section of scripture is exceedingly controversial. Peter discusses the role of women in marriage and their relationship to their own husbands. This is a must see sermon for all married couples, and will help unmarried people arrange their lives in a way that will prepare them for a godly marriage.
TEXT: *1 Peter 3:1 6
PREACHER: *Pastor Mark Driscoll
DATE: March 15, 2009
h3. Introduction
Three general categories that describe many marriages:
1) Non-Christian Feminism
No distinction between the roles of husband and wife. They live parallel lives, legally married but functionally single.
2) Christian Egalitarianism
No distinction between the roles of husband and wife. They also live parallel lives, but often share some unifying, ephemeral elements (e.g. kids, hobbies, church).
3) Christian Complementarianism
Husband and wife fulfill distinct and equal roles. They live as one together under Gods authority with unified purpose.
h3. Wives are to follow their husbands leadership
Husbands are commanded to love their wives as Jesus loves the Church (Eph. 5:25); Jesus died for the Church. Jesus example guards against chauvinism and other abuses of the principle of submission.
Ways a husband can handle disagreements with his wife: Pray and discuss with your wife. Be patient. Wait for her to come around.
Appeal to a higher authority (pastor/counselor).
If the matter is pressing and/or a decision cannot be reached, the husband must decide. His wife should submit to the decision.
h3. Wives are to preach wordless sermons
Those who have unbelieving husbands should not nag or be preachy, but rather love, serve, and respect their husbands, praying that God would use these actions to soften the husbands heart.
h3. Wives are to cultivate true beauty
There is nothing wrong with outward beauty, but it is fleeting and deceptive (Prov. 31:30). Holiness is true beauty. Godly wives have a quiet and gentle spirit; they are not silent, but prudent (knowing when and where to speak).
h3. Wives should seek to know exemplary women
Peter gives Sarah as an example, and the Bible is clear that she is flawed. She is exemplary for her honesty and repentance, not because she is perfect; she ultimately did submit to God and to her husband.
h3. Wives should fight fear
Fear (what if it doesnt work out? what if Im unhappy? what if my husband makes a bad decision?) makes life miserable and should be fought against by faith.
h3. Submission Does Not Mean:
A husband is in ultimate authority.
A wife does not have independent thoughts.
A wife does not seek to influence her husband.
A wife must obey her husbands command to sin.
A wife is less intelligent or competent than her husband.
h3. Submission Does Mean:
A husband and wife are equal with complementary roles.
Wives are to submit like Jesus did in Gethsemane (Luke 22:42).
Husbands are to lovingly lead like Jesus does the Church (Eph. 5:25).
A single woman should only marry a man she can follow.
christian marriage shows the Trinity and the gospel.

Marriage In Islam ~ By Imam Anwar Al-Awlaki
Marriage in Islam is recommended as a religious requirement.
“Marry those among you who are single and (marry) your slaves, male and female, that are righteous” (Quran 24:32)
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) declared:
“When the servant of Allah marries, he has fulfilled half the (responsibilities laid on him by the) faith; so let him be God conscious with respect to the other half”. (Mishkat)
Marriage has also been commended as the way of the prophets.
“We indeed sent messengers before you (O Muhammad), and We assigned them wives and children”. (Quran 13:38)
marriage, in fact, is specifically considered the tradition (sunnah) of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) when he declared:
“Marriage is my Sunnah, whoever disregards my (sunnah) path is not from among us”. (ibn Majah)
Islam discourages celibacy and encourages marriage, as Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) recommended:
“Whoever is able to marry, should marry”. (Bukhari)
The Prophet peace be upon him said, “If someone whose faith and morals you trust makes a proposal of marriage to you then marry him, otherwise there will be trials and much corruption in the land.”
As Muslims it is also our duty to support our brothers and sisters to get married because Allah says in the Quran, “And help to get married those among you who are single or the virtuous ones of your slaves, males or females. If they are in poverty Allah will give them means out of His grace. For Allah encompasses all and knows all things.” (Al-Noor 24:32)
